Texas Society of Architects Continuing Education
Requirements for Texas architects: 12 Continuing Education Program Hours (CEPH) annually.
- At least 1 of the 12 hours must be related to barrier-free design.
- At least 1 of the 12 hours must be related to sustainable or energy-efficient design.
- All CEPH must be pertinent to Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW).
- All 12 continuing education program hours may be taken online.
The CE rules have been amended. You should record your continuing education activities by calendar year. When you renew, you will be asked to verify completion of the 12-hour requirement for the calendar year. The renewal date will remain the same, which is the last day of the registration's birth month. (Example: If your expiration date is February 28, when you renew prior to February 28th, you must confirm that you completed 12 hours of continuing education in the previous calendar year.)
All CEPH shall include the study of relevant technical and professional architectural subjects pertinent to the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
You cannot repeat anything you have taken in the last three years except for the Texas Accessibility Academy or another similar course offered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). The same restrictions apply to self-directed study.
Activities that are typically not approved for CEPH credit include those geared toward teaching motivation, goal-setting, time management, organizational skills, communication, sales, or marketing skills.
The Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE) does not pre-approve courses or register providers of continuing education.

I'm an AIA member. Do you report my continuing education hours to the AIA?
Yes. If you are an AIA member, we report all continuing education hours to the AIA after you complete your continuing education with us. However, you do not need to be a member of AIA to take course courses and receive credit in Texas.
Do you report my results to the Texas Board?
In Texas, you will renew your license and check the box letting them know you completed your mandatory architect continuing education. If the board audits you, they will ask you to provide your certificates of completion for your architect continuing education courses.
Do you offer any architect continuing education training that is not online or correspondence?
We offer online and correspondence continuing education to renew your Texas architect license. We do not offer any classroom continuing education courses for Texas architects. We find that most students prefer to complete their continuing education online on their computer, smartphone, or tablet – or out of our course booklet.
Do you provide me with a certificate of completion when I finish your continuing education course?
Yes, all graduates of our Texas architect continuing education course will receive a certificate of completion. We can either email, mail, or fax the certificate to you.
What is the definition of barrier-free design for CE purposes?
Barrier-free design is the design of a building or a facility or the design or alteration of a building or a facility which complies with Texas Accessibility Standards, the American with Disability Act, the Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines, or similarly accepted standards for accessible design.
What is the definition Energy-Efficient Design for continuing education purposes?
Energy-efficient design is the design of a project and the specification of materials that minimize the consumption of energy in the use of the project. The term includes energy efficiency strategies by design as well as the incorporation of alternative energy systems.
What is the definition of sustainable design?
Sustainable design is an integrative approach to the process of design which seeks to avoid depletion of energy, water, and raw material resources; prevent environmental degradation caused by facility and infrastructure developments during their implementation and over their life cycle; and create environments that are livable and promote health, safety, and well-being. Sustainability is the concept of meeting today's needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own need.
